What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach originally developed for the treatment of trauma and post-traumatic stress. Unlike therapies that rely primarily on talking through an experience, EMDR uses a structured therapeutic process that includes bilateral stimulation—often through guided eye movements or other alternating stimulation—while working with distressing memories, emotions, beliefs, and physical sensations.

The goal is not to erase a memory. Instead, EMDR helps the brain process the experience so that remembering what happened no longer produces the same level of emotional distress. You still know what happened. It simply begins to feel like something that happened then, rather than something your mind and body are continuing to experience now.

What EMDR Can Help With

EMDR is best known as a treatment for trauma and PTSD, but it may also be incorporated into therapy for a variety of concerns involving distressing experiences, memories, or deeply held negative beliefs. EMDR therapy may be helpful for people experiencing:

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Childhood trauma

  • Difficult or painful relationships

  • Grief and loss

  • Anxiety and fear

  • Distressing memories

  • Shame and negative beliefs about oneself

  • Experiences related to addiction and recovery

  • Major life events or transitions

  • Patterns that seem connected to past experiences

Your therapist will work with you to determine whether EMDR is appropriate for your individual needs and treatment goals.

You Don't Have to Tell Every Detail of Your Story

One reason some people are interested in EMDR is that effective treatment does not necessarily require describing every detail of a traumatic experience aloud. Your therapist needs enough information to understand what you are experiencing and provide appropriate treatment, but EMDR does not depend on repeatedly recounting an entire traumatic event in detail. For people who have avoided therapy because they don't want to continually retell painful experiences, this can make EMDR feel more approachable.

Is EMDR Right For Me?

There is no single therapy that is right for everyone. EMDR may be worth exploring if you recognize that experiences from your past continue to influence your emotions, relationships, behaviors, or beliefs about yourself. You do not need to diagnose yourself with PTSD or even be certain that what you experienced was “traumatic enough.” An EMDR-trained therapist can help you understand what you are experiencing, discuss your treatment options, and determine whether EMDR may be appropriate for you.
